It is pertinent to note that earlier in September 2020, a woman traveling from Lahore to Gujranwala on the motorway with her three children was also gang-raped during a robbery.

On September 9, 2020, a woman was gang-raped by two armed men in the Gujarpura area of the Lahore-Sialkot motorway while she was waiting for help with her children when her car stopped moving.

After this incident, the woman’s relative, who reached the scene of the incident, also filed a case of the incident in the Gujarpura police station in her complaint.

On September 12, the then Chief Minister of Punjab, while claiming to have reached the real accused, said that the main accused in the incident was identified as Abid Ali and his DNA had been matched, while efforts were underway to arrest him. In addition, a search is also underway for a co-accused, Waqar-ul-Hassan.

However, on September 13, co-accused Waqar-ul-Hassan denied the charges against him while being arrested at the CIA Lahore.

On September 14, the Punjab Chief Minister had said that an accused involved in the rape of a woman, Shafqat had been arrested, whose DNA not only matched the samples from the crime scene but also confessed to the crime.

Later, after several days of searching, the main accused in the motorway rape case, Abid Malhi, was arrested from Faisalabad on October 12.

The leader of the four-member gang, Abid, was also wanted by the police in 10 other cases registered in different police stations in Punjab.
