Guidelines should determine how much AI will be used in judicial system

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recommended the development of guidelines on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah has issued an 18-page judgment on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judicial system.
According to the court judgment, ChatGPT and DeepSeek can increase judicial efficiency. Many judges around the world have acknowledged the use of AI to assist in decisions. AI can be used in research and draft preparation in writing decisions.
According to the judgment, AI is only an auxiliary ‘tool’ and is not a substitute for the decision-making of a judge. AI should not be a substitute for the autonomy of complete human decision-making in the judiciary.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah further wrote in the court decision that AI is only for facilitating smart legal research. The Judicial Reforms Committee and the Law and Justice Commission should prepare guidelines. The guidelines should determine how much AI will be used in the judicial system.
