Russia to launch state messaging app to replace WhatsApp, Telegram
‘Purpose of this app is to promote digital independence’

(Web Desk): Russia has recently decided to develop an official messaging app as an alternative to WhatsApp and Telegram, aimed at strengthening its digital sovereignty.
The purpose of this app is to promote digital independence, especially since 2022, when many Western tech firms began withdrawing from the Russian market following the country's invasion of Ukraine.
Additionally, the new app will be integrated with government portals like Gosuslugi, allowing users to securely store their digital ID, identity documents, online services, and digital signatures in one place.
Critics of government policies, such as Mikhail Klimaryov, have warned that measures like reducing reliance on WhatsApp and Telegram could pressure users into adopting the new app, potentially undermining individual privacy and freedoms.
Russia’s lower house of parliament has unanimously approved the bill to develop the app. It will now move to the upper house and then to the president for final approval.
