PDMA issues alert over rising water levels in Punjab’s rivers

(Web Desk): The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert regarding rising water levels in all major rivers of Punjab.

According to the alert issued by PDMA, water levels in all major rivers and their adjoining streams and canals are expected to rise from July 7.

A PDMA spokesperson said that a strong spell of monsoon rains is forecasted to begin in Punjab from July 6, while there is also a risk of flash flooding in the Rodkohis of Dera Ghazi Khan division.

The spokesperson added that monsoon rains could also cause urban flooding in major cities, and landslides may occur in vulnerable areas of Murree and the Galiyat region.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed all deputy commissioners across the province to remain alert.

He advised farmers to take all necessary precautions in accordance with weather forecasts and instructions, and urged relevant departments to stay prepared for any emergencies.

The DG stated that all District Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs), including the Provincial Control Room, have been put on high alert.

The PDMA control room will continue monitoring the situation 24/7, with rescue agencies including 1122 keeping their machinery and personnel on standby.

He further advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions and to refrain from staying in dilapidated or unstable buildings.

He highlighted that most accidents have occurred due to falling roofs and weak structures, urging special care for children and warning against letting them near water-logged low-lying areas.

Irfan Ali Kathia also warned against staying in open places during thunderstorms and lightning and urged citizens to call PDMA’s helpline at 1129 for assistance.
