Most of those who died were farmers and laborers who were working outdoors under open skies

(Web Desk): At least 33 people have been killed and dozens injured in lightning strikes during monsoon storms in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, according to a report by news agency AFP.
The fatalities occurred between Wednesday and Thursday amid intense storms. According to a statement from the State Disaster Management Department, most of those who died were farmers and laborers who were working outdoors under open skies.
The Meteorological Department has forecast further heavy rains and lightning in several parts of the state.
Bihar's Disaster Management Minister, Vijay Kumar Mandal, told AFP that authorities in vulnerable districts have been instructed to raise awareness among the public about taking precautionary measures after lightning alerts are issued.
The state government has announced a compensation of 400,000 Indian rupees (approximately $4,600 USD) for the families of those who died due to lightning.
According to the state government, at least 243 people have died due to lightning strikes in 2024 so far, compared to 275 deaths in the previous year.
Bihar and other eastern regions of India regularly face flooding and extreme weather during the monsoon season each year, leading to dozens of deaths and the displacement of millions.
