Nepal to block some social media apps, including Facebook
Govt accused social media platforms of failing to reach agreements with authorities in cracking down on misuse of apps

Kathmandu: Nepal has decided to block several social media platforms, including Facebook.
According to a foreign news agency report, a statement issued by the Nepalese government on Thursday said that access to several social media platforms, including Facebook, will be blocked.
The Nepalese government accused social media platforms of failing to reach agreements with authorities in cracking down on misuse of apps.
The government says that social media users with fake IDs are spreading hatred, rumors, and committing cybercrime. These individuals are disturbing social harmony through some platforms in the country, where 90 percent of the 30 million population uses the internet.
Earlier, the Nepalese government had given social media platforms until Wednesday to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and name a local contact, complaint handler, and a person responsible for self-regulation or face closure.
Later on Thursday, an official notice directed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) regulator to disable unregistered social media.
