Ishiba assumed office as PM in Oct 2024, but following the party’s devastating defeat in the July 2025 elections, his position significantly weakened

(Web Desk): Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to step down from his position, according to foreign media reports.
Ishiba reportedly made the decision in order to prevent further division within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
He assumed office as Prime Minister in October 2024, but following the party’s devastating defeat in the July 2025 elections, his position significantly weakened. After the electoral loss, the LDP lost its majority in the Lower House, making it increasingly difficult for the Prime Minister to implement policies.
Right-wing leaders within the party had been consistently pressuring Ishiba to accept responsibility for the defeat and resign. According to reports, even the Minister of Agriculture personally urged him to step down during a one-on-one meeting.
Ishiba is expected to formally announce his resignation during a press conference on July 7, while the LDP leadership election is scheduled to take place on September 8.
