(Web Desk): Fifty Sudanese migrants have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Lebanon, according to foreign media reports. The incident occurred near Tobruk, on Lebanon’s eastern shoreline, where a boat carrying migrants from Sudan met with a tragic accident.
Reports state that 75 migrants were on board a rubber boat traveling from Lebanon to Greece when a sudden fire broke out on the vessel, causing it to sink and leading to the drowning of 50 people.
During the rescue operation, 24 individuals were saved, while one person remains missing, and search efforts are ongoing.
It is worth noting that Libya serves as a major transit point each year for thousands of migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.
According to authorities, between January 1 and September 13, at least 456 people have died and 420 have gone missing while attempting to cross the central Mediterranean route to Europe.
