US envoy hints at imminent Gaza breakthrough amid ongoing talks

(Web Desk): US Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Whitkoff, has stated that he is confident a breakthrough for Gaza may be announced in the coming days.

On Tuesday, President Trump held meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly with leaders and officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan, where discussions were held on the nearly two-year-long war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

Steve Whitkoff shared that during these meetings, President Trump’s 21-point peace plan for Gaza was presented to some world leaders attending the UNGA session.

He added that Israel is willing to continue negotiations with Hamas, and that Hamas has also signaled a willingness to reach a settlement.

The US envoy further stated that talks with Iran are also ongoing, though Iran maintains a firm stance. “We are willing to negotiate with Iran,” he said.

Following these meetings, President Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday.

It is worth noting that the Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, following an attack by Hamas. According to Israeli sources, 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in that attack, and around 251 people were taken hostage.

According to local authorities, over 65,000 people — the majority of them civilians — have been killed in Gaza since the war began.
