Team US' 39 golds beat the totals they managed at five of the previous eight summer Olympic Games and are the 11th-most golds they have managed at a Summer Olympics.

The USA Sunday also topped the standings at Tokyo 2020 for the most overall medals with 113 – 39 golds, 41 silvers and 33 bronzes.

The total makes it the United States's second-most successful Olympics since Los Angeles 1984, having won 121 overall medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Team USA headed into the final day of action at the Olympics two golds behind China, which had 38, but chased down their tally on Sunday.

Their 37th and 38th golds came within minutes of each other as Jennifer Valente won the women's omnium in the velodrome while the dominant women's basketball team secured their seventh straight gold with a 90-75 win over hosts Japan.

With the curtain coming down on the Games, Team USA was locked at 38 golds.

The USA's 113 medals saw them finish 25 ahead of China, with Japan in third on 58 and Great Britain in fourth with 65.

On golds alone, the USA finished top, China in second while hosts Japan ended up in third with 27 and Great Britain fourth on 22.
