Casio made a furry robot designed to cuddle and calm you down

Casio’s furry Moflin robot will learn to recognize you the more you interact with it, and over time, it will develop its own simulated personality and emotions.

Casio has opened preorders for its robotic pet called Moflin that looks like a cross between a hamster and Star Trek’s Tribbles. Unlike Sony’s robot dog Aibo that can follow you around, Moflin is designed to be held and cuddled, and over time, Casio says it will learn who you are and attempt to develop a simulated bond expressed through unique sounds and movements.

Originally developed through a collaboration with a Japanese startup called Vanguard Industries, Moflin is now being manufactured and distributed by Casio. It can be preordered for ¥59,400 (around $398 USD) and is expected to be available starting on November 7th. Casio is also offering an optional subscription service called Club Moflin for ¥6,600 (about $44 USD) per year, which gets you a discount on repairs, cleanings, and even a complete fur replacement. Accidents happen.

Casio’s Moflin isn’t designed to be a play toy like Sony’s Aibo. It’s intended to be more of a comforting companion and potentially a tool to help improve your mental wellness, similar to Qoobo, the headless robotic cat. While being held, Moflin’s limited head and body movements are supposed to make it feel like the furry robot is attempting to snuggle with you, and as with many devices debuting this year, there are some AI-powered features, too.

Moflin is supposed to learn to recognize the person who interacts with it the most through their voice and the way they handle the bot, and it will respond with unique sounds and movements only expressed to that person to simulate a close bond.

The robot is also designed to develop its own simulated feelings and personality, which can change over time. With regular interactions, it will become happy, secure, and calm. If it’s ignored, it can become stressed, anxious, and sad. But given the robot’s limited emotive capabilities, it doesn’t make sad sounds, or display an anxious wiggle, demonstrating those feelings. Its emotional state can only be determined through an app, making it feel almost like a very expensive Tamagotchi, minus any digital rewards for being a diligent caregiver. The app can also be used to turn down the volume of the sounds the robot makes.

To further enhance the illusion of Moflin being a living creature, instead of jabbing a USB cable into it, it comes with a small bed the robot appears to sleep in while it recharges. Casio estimates the battery life on a full charge will be close to five hours, while a three-and-a-half-hour nap charge will have it ready to be your emotional support bot once again.

Djokovic beats Fritz to set up Shanghai final with Sinner

Fourth seed Djokovic came into the match with a remarkable 9-0 head-to-head record

Shanghai (Reuters): Novak Djokovic moved a step closer to his 100th ATP title on Saturday when he beat American seventh seed Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6(6) in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals to set up a title decider against top-ranked Jannik Sinner.

Earlier on Saturday, Sinner secured the year-end world number one ranking by beating Czech 30th seed Tomas Machac 6-4 7-5 and becoming the first Italian to reach the final.

Djokovic, the 24-times Grand Slam champion, will play his fifth final in the tournament's history, looking to claim his 100th ATP title as well as his fifth Shanghai Masters crown.

"I came here this year definitely with the vision or desire to get to the final and fight for 100 titles," Djokovic said.

"I've got that chance against the best player in the world and let's see what happens."

Fourth seed Djokovic came into the match with a remarkable 9-0 head-to-head record against Fritz and immediately turned up the pressure in the opening game, forcing the American to successfully defend three break points.

The Serbian kept Fritz on the ropes with his powerful and precise groundstrokes, using his backhand to devastating effect as he racked up three more break points at 2-2.

Fritz was only able to fend off one before sending a backhand flying wide, with the break proving decisive as Djokovic wrapped up the opener with his first ace of the match.

U.S. Open finalist Fritz built up some momentum in the second set after holding serve in a tight game where Djokovic landed a series of spectacular passing shots, before earning his first two break point opportunities of the match at 4-3.

The Beats Pill speaker is even cheaper than it was during Prime Day

The Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker is $1 cheaper than its all-time low Prime Day price. Plus, you a Fire TV Stick 4K Max Game Pass bundle and AirPods Max are at their lowest.

We’re well past the Prime Day Redux now, but several standout deals from the sale are still hanging on. In fact, some are even better than they were during the two-day sale — even if only a smidge. The Beats Pill portable Bluetooth speaker in red is down to $97.99 ($52 off) at Amazon, for example, which is $1 cheaper than the all-time low we saw it hit this past week. It’s also still available for $99.99 ($50 off) in gold and black.

The pill-shaped speaker represents a roaring comeback for the brand in the category. It’s the first new Beats-branded portable speaker we’ve seen in years after the Pill Plus was discontinued in 2022. Apple refined the original’s charming design and revamped its entire feature set with welcome modernities like two-way USB-C charging and lossless audio. We also get native support for some iOS and Android tie-ins, including each platform’s respective Find My feature and access to Siri and Google Assistant (sadly, you can’t summon either by voice).

We found it sounds pretty good, too. Apple claims its redesigned woofer and repositioned tweeter handle distortion better, and it does sound good for its size, though we noticed its limitations as a mono speaker at the volume’s high end. You can pair two of them for true stereo sound, however, and it’s otherwise great for most listening scenarios. The speaker also has IP67 water and dust protection, up to 24 hours of battery life, and a built-in lanyard for easy transport.

More deals before the long weekend

You can get an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max bundle that includes an Xbox Wireless Controller and one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $79.99 ($66.98 off) at Amazon. Another deal matching its all-time low Prime Day price is a three-pack of Kasa Smart Plugs (HS103P3). It’s down to $15.99 ($9 off) at Amazon when clicking the on-page coupon. The older smart plugs don’t support Matter, but they’re still wholly capable as inexpensive smart home starters for those just getting their feet wet. You can control power for any device plugged into them using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The two-pack of Kasa’s Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim (EP25P2) adds Apple Home support into the mix, and it’s also on sale for a similar price of $14.99 ($15 off) at Amazon with a coupon. The AirPods Max with USB-C are still matching their all-time low of $498.99 ($51 off) at Amazon. If you don’t care about the connector, you can get the same listening experience much cheaper by springing for the AirPods Max with Lightning, which has plummeted to a new all-time low of $394.95 (about $154 off). The luxurious headphones are chunky and a bit heavy on the head, but the ear cushions are nice and comfy, and they do a good job of trapping the terrific sound quality you’ll get from the drivers. They also have great noise cancellation and transparency modes, plus personalized spatial audio support. Read our review.
