SCG to have first-ever statue of female cricketer on International Women's Day
Canberra: Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday has announced that the country’s first-ever statue of a female cricketer will be sculpted and put on display at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as an effort to address the imbalance of public recognition for women in cricket.
The announcement, made on International Women's Day (March 08) and the move is a part of a wider position by CA to create a recognition of women in cricket and to help grow the game of cricket for females.
Last year Australia won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in front of 86,174 fans against India.
This is part of a wider commitment to recognising the contribution women have made to cricket.

Among the cricketers who will likely to have a statue includes Betty Wilson who played for Australia during the 1940's and 50's and former captain Belinda Clark who retired in 2005. Current players Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, and Ellyse Perry are also being considered.
Cricket Australia’s interim CEO, Nick Hockley, said, “Just as this year’s International Women’s Day theme promotes ‘choose to challenge’, we are committed to challenging ourselves to continue to address gender inequality across our game”.
He further added that it was important for this glaring gender imbalance to be addressed.
Moreover, there are 73 known statues and sculptures of male cricketers in Australia.
