Moscow: Streaming giant Netflix has reportedly halted its service in Russia in the wake of the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, a company spokesperson stated.

Earlier this week, Netflix temporarily stopped all future projects and acquisitions in Russia as it assessed the impact of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia," the Netflix spokesperson said.

This means Russians will no longer be able to sign up for a new subscription starting on Monday (March 7), and current subscribers will have access to their accounts only until the end of their current billing cycle.

However, after this time, accounts belonging to people in Russia will be temporarily suspended, until the situation in Ukraine changes, and Netflix may consider restarting their services in Russia.

Moreover, the streaming giant also declined to comply with Russian rules to carry news channels.

The company had earlier said it had no plans to add state-run channels to its Russian service, despite a regulation that would require it to distribute state-backed channels.

Netflix has just under 1 million subscribers in Russia, compared to its 222 million total paid memberships across the globe.

Last week, Disney announced that it was pausing all film debuts in the country, including the new Pixar film “Turning Red.” Warner Bros., Sony, Paramount Pictures and Universal all followed.
