All eyes on Pak parliament as NA session resumes
Imran Khan decided to resign from the National Assembly en masse, saying he will not sit in the assembly with corrupt people.
Islamabad: The National Assembly (NA) resumed its session at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Monday with Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri in the chair.
Shortly after the session began, the acting Speaker Qasim Suri, urged the members sitting in the house to maintain silence as he wanted to deliver ‘extremely important things’—before waving a piece of paper, which he termed as the reason of this political turmoil.
Referring to his April 3 ruling, when Qasim Suri dismissed the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan on grounds of "foreign conspiracy" triggered by a "threat letter", the speaker said that he had been under intense scrutiny for this.
The House is set to elect new leader of the House after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was voted out as a result of no-confidence.
Pakistan Muslim Leage-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif is representing the joint opposition while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its allies have fielded Shah Mahmood Qureshi for the office of Prime Minister.
Earlier, the ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and several lawmakers decided to resign from the National Assembly en masse, saying they will not sit in the assembly with corrupt people.
After this the session continued with PTI’s vice president Shah Mehmood Qureshi giving a speech— before boycotting the election. All PTI members of Nation Assembly (MNA), then, walked out of the session to elect the new prime minister.
Qureshi said taking part in this election will be similar to legitimizing the corrupt government.
For now, PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq, who is acting as Speaker after Acting Speaker Qasim Suri walked out, carrying out the proceedings for the election of Prime Minister.
