Islamabad: Lashing out at the coalition government over the arrest of former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday said that Pakistan has become a “banana republic devoid of rule of law”.

On his official Twitter handle, the former Prime Minister vented anger at Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja over the arrest of his close aide Fawad Chaudhry, saying Pakistan has become a banana republic – a small country that is politically unstable.

“Fawad's arrest on his apt description of the CEC leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that Pakistan has become a banana republic devoid of rule of law,” read the tweet.

Imran Khan, then, urged the general public to stand up before Pakistan reaches the 'no-return point'

The ousted leader also announced to hold a press conference at 4:00 pm today.

Fawad, who served as information minister from 2018 to 2022, was arrested at his home in Lahore in the wee hours over his threatening remarks regarding Sikandar Sultan Raja and other members of the Election Commission.
