Washington: Nusrat Jahan Choudhury has shattered barriers and made history as the first Muslim American woman and Bangladeshi American to be appointed as a federal judge in the United States.
Choudhury, a distinguished civil rights attorney, received confirmation from the Senate, marking a groundbreaking moment in the nation's judicial history.
She is currently serving as the legal director of the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The ACLU, with which Choudhury has collaborated extensively, expressed their support and enthusiasm for her confirmation.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who recommended her for the position, praised her as an embodiment of the American Dream.
While Choudhury garnered broad support, her confirmation also faced opposition from some senators.
Senator Joe Manchin expressed reservations regarding her previous statements on criminal justice reform, raising concerns about her impartiality toward law enforcement.
Nevertheless, the majority vote favored her appointment, solidifying her historic achievement.
