Magnitude 6.8 quake kills 296 in Morocco
The epicenter of the earthquake was the Atlas Mountains, 75 km from the city of Morocco.
Rabat: As a result of severe earthquake in Morocco, 296 people died and hundreds were injured, while many houses, mosques and business centers were destroyed.
According to US Geological Survey, the magnitude of earthquake in the southwestern region of Morocco was recorded at 6.8.
The epicenter of the earthquake was the Atlas Mountains, 75 km from the city of Morocco, and its underground depth was recorded at 18.5 km.
According to local media, many areas of the earthquake have lost electricity, while historical buildings declared as world cultural heritage by UNESCO have also been damaged.
Moroccan authorities said at least 296 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the earthquake, while more than 150 people have been injured and admitted to various hospitals.
Officials stated that as a result of earthquake, many buildings were destroyed while dozens of buildings were partially damaged.
Rescue and relief operations have been started in the earthquake affected areas and people have been requested to donate blood in hospitals.
