Pak vs NZ: Chief selector explains decision to choose Azam Khan over Mohammad Haris

Lahore:  Pakistan's Chief Selector Wahab Riaz explained the decision to choose Azam Khan over Mohammad Haris for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

The chief selector clarified in a press conference that Haris was rested for this series, emphasizing that he remained a crucial part of Pakistan's future plans.

Riaz highlighted the objective of providing opportunities to domestic performers in First Class cricket to enhance the pool of players, leading to Haris's exclusion from this particular tour. He assured that the decision was made with a focus on long-term planning for the team.

Regarding the selection of Azam Khan, Riaz emphasized the close scrutiny of his game by the management. He underscored the importance of a player's match-winning skills, prioritizing them over physical fitness. Riaz conveyed a clear message to Azam Khan about the team's investment in him and the need for a corresponding response.

“We want to invest in him, but he has to respond as well,” stated Wahab Riaz. He acknowledged that expecting drastic changes in a player's fitness within a short timeframe is unrealistic but emphasized the importance of a gradual improvement in fitness.

Azam Khan's high-impact performances in various leagues, including the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and domestic cricket, were cited as key factors influencing his selection.
