Heatwave leaves 12 people dead in Hyderabad
The data from the hospital shows that 50 patients affected by the heatwave were admitted in the past 24 hours, with 12 of them succumbing to the conditions
Hyderabad: At least 12 people died in Hyderabad, Sindh’s second-largest city, likely due to heatstroke, the local civil hospital administration.
Among the deceased were two women and one prisoner.
The data from the hospital indicated that 50 patients affected by the heatwave were admitted in the past 24 hours, with 12 of them succumbing to the conditions.
In Karachi, 100 bodies have been brought to the morgue over the past three days amid extreme heat. A spokesperson from the Chheepa Foundation reported that the bodies were brought to their cold storage, highlighting the rising number of deaths in the current hot weather.
The spokesperson detailed that 37 bodies were received on June 23, 44 on June 24, and 19 on June 25, with 36 of these bodies remaining unidentified.
Pakistan's climate is warming at a rate significantly faster than the global average, potentially rising by 2.3 to 8.8 degrees Fahrenheit by the 2090s compared to the 1986–2005 baseline, as noted by a World Bank expert panel on climate change. The country, highly vulnerable to climate change, also faces the threat of heavier monsoon rains.
This year's monsoon season is expected to begin in July, potentially leading to flash floods, according to a statement from Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.
