Peshawar: A Peshawar district and sessions court handed capital punishment to prime accused in the Asma Rani Murder case on Friday. The verdict was announced after three years.

The victim Asma Rani was a third-year medical student and shot dead in Kohat in January 2018 for refusing a marriage proposal.

As per deceased’s family, Asma was returning home in an auto with her sister-in-law when Mujahid Afridi, who was waiting outside their house, gunned her down.

She received three bullet wounds and was shifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition where she did not sustained her injuries and died.

In a video statement, the MBBS student had identified Mujahidullah Afridi as the assailant before succumbing to her wounds.

The accused, Mujahidullah Afridi fled the country but later was taken into custody from Dubai in March 2018 with the help of Interpol.

Police had registered an FIR of the case under Section 324 and 304 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The case was then shifted to Peshawar from Kohat due to security concerns.

However, today District and Sessions Judge Ashfaq Taj announced this verdict after observing evidence and hearing arguments of prosecution and defense attorney.

In addition, the court acquitted two accused Siddiqullah and Shahzeb.
