Covidshield: India on the lookout for its main vaccine to get accepted for EU travel
One of the world’s largest vaccination makers, Indian Serum Institute is seeking approval for its Covidshield vaccination.
This news comes out while reports stating the ineligibility of Covidshield for the EU travel pass surface.
For now this travel pass, a digital green certificate is restricted to EU citizens only.
The vaccines that have been deemed eligible for the EU travel pass have all been accepted for marketing by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
The Indian Serum Institute’s CEO, Adar Poonawalla, has posted a tweet:
“I realise that a lot of Indians who have taken COVISHIELD are facing issues with travel to the E.U., I assure everyone, I have taken this up at the highest levels and hope to resolve this matter soon, both with regulators and at a diplomatic level with countries.’’
According to BBC, the Serum had yet to apply for the authorization.
The India-version of AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevriavaccination, Covidshield has also been administered in EU.
In February, Covidshield was approved in case of emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). Though, it is still to be known if the rest of the travelers can visit the EU on the same terms. The member states can now individually grant permission to the travelers who have been vaccinated,
"That have been authorised at the national level or by the World Health Organization (WHO)," according to the European Commission.
