‘Angel of Mercy’: Nation remembers Abdul Sattar Edhi on fifth death anniversary
Karachi: The fifth death anniversary of philanthropist and social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi is being observed on Thursday across the country.
Abdul Sattar Edhi, the late founder of the Edhi Foundation-one of the biggest charity foundations of the country. Despite having limited resources, he served humanity selflessly and was acknowledged for his work across the globe.
The late humanitarian helped the poor, children, women and differently-abled persons as well as animals.
He also laid the world's largest volunteer ambulance network.
Ever since, he took the path of service to humanity. Soon, his welfare network reached across the country.
His services were also acknowledged internationally. He was awarded with several national honors including Hilal-e-Imtiaz.
Additionally, the Guinness Book of World Records also acknowledged his services.
His mother passed away as she could not be given healthcare on time, which moved him to establish a free clinic in Karachi with Rs5, 000 in 1951.
He set up the free dispensary for the city's low-income residents.
The ‘Angel of mercy’ is one of the most renowned and respected personalities of Pakistan.
Edhi was born on February 28, 1928 in Bantva in India’s Gujarat. He migrated to Pakistan after Partition and shifted to Karachi. He was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2013 and was unable to get a transplant due to frail health. He was receiving treatment at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).
After a prolonged battle with renal disease, he passed away in 2016 at the age of 88.
