Court accepted Punjab government’s request for respite


Islamabad: The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of the Punjab government’s appeals for the cancellation of bail of the accused in the May 9 incidents this week.
According to the details, the Supreme Court has delisted all the May 9 and 10 cases scheduled this and next week.
Lawyer Zulfiqar Naqvi appeared in the court and said that the Punjab government has appointed him as a lawyer in the May 9 cases and he requested the Supreme Court to give him time to prepare.
On this, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi said that the May 9 cases are scheduled for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. In the previous hearings, the additional prosecutor has been appearing and asking for time. Today, you are asking for time. It will not work like this. This is not a single case, there are about 50 appeals.
The Punjab government’s lawyer replied that the cases of this week should be postponed and he would come prepared next week. On this, the Chief Justice said that some appeals are also related to the transfer of cases. The matter of transferring the cases has been concluded. Take instructions from the government on this.
Later, the court accepted the Punjab government’s request for a respite, after which all the cases will be heard after Eid by a three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
It is pertinent to note that the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted bail to the accused on May 9, after which the Punjab government approached the Supreme Court to cancel the bail.
