Each F-35A fighter jet costs approximately £80 million (about $109 million), making the total cost for 12 jets nearly £1 billion

(Web Desk): The United Kingdom has announced that it will purchase 12 F-35A fighter jets from Lockheed Martin, which are capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons.
The government has described this move as the most significant expansion of its nuclear defense in a generation.
According to a report by British news agency Reuters, the UK will acquire F-35A aircraft — a step that will provide the country with a dual nuclear deterrent. Prime Minister Keir Starmer cited rising global threats as the reason behind this decision.
Until now, the UK’s nuclear capability relied solely on submarines that continuously patrol the seas. These new aircraft will give the Royal Air Force the ability to carry nuclear weapons for the first time since the end of the Cold War.
Prime Minister Starmer stated, “In an era where uncertainty is at its peak, we cannot take peace for granted.”

The United States will supply the B61 tactical nuclear bombs to be used on these aircraft. A British official said this move is part of a broader plan for the UK to take on more responsibility in European security.
These aircraft will enable the UK to join NATO's dual-capable aircraft fleet — jets that can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, “This is yet another strong contribution by the UK to NATO.”
The UK last had an airborne nuclear capability in 1998, when the WE-177 bomb was retired from service.
By purchasing the new F-35A jets, the UK is diversifying its defense strategy and aligning more closely with NATO allies like the United States and France, both of which maintain land, sea, and air-based nuclear capabilities.
According to 10 Downing Street, the deal will support around 20,000 jobs in the UK and further strengthen the country’s commitment to NATO.
