Godfather star James Caan passes away at 82
Caan played Sonny Corleone in the Godfather series and was nominated for an Oscar for his role


American actor James Caan, the star of the Godfather films, has passed away. He was 82 years old.
The news was announced via the actor’s official Twitter account.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” it read. No cause of death was announced.
Caan played Sonny Corleone in the Godfather series and was nominated for an Oscar for his role.
Multiple outlets, including the BBC, have reported that Caan was known for his partying lifestyle. The Guardian noted that Caan quit acting in the early 80s before engineering a comeback in the late 1980s. He then starred in films such as Misery, The Yards and Elf.
He was born in 1940 in the Bronx, New York City to a father who was a kosher butcher. He had been married four times and had five children.
