At least 24 inmates escape following reportedly coordinated prison attack in northern Mexico

Mexico City: At least 14 people, including 10 guards and four inmates, have died in an armed attack on a prison in Mexico’s northeastern city of Ciudad Juarez.
According to local authorities, heavily armed gunmen in armored vehicles arrived at the prison around 7 am local time and opened fire on the guards on Sunday.
Thirteen people were wounded and at least 24 inmates escaped, reports said adding that some rioting inmates set fire to various objects and clashed with prison guards.
A prison break followed what is believed to be a 'coordinated attack'.
Details were not available about how the escaped inmates were able to flee, and it was not immediately clear who carried out the attack.
The Chihuahua state prosecutor said in a statement that the situation at the prison had been brought under control following a joint operation by the Mexican military, the National Guard and local police.
In August, hundreds of Mexican soldiers were sent to Juarez after a prison face-off between members of two rival cartels caused a riot and shootouts that killed 11 people, most of them civilians.
