Suspect identified as Dr Usman Qazi is affiliated with banned militant organisation

QUETTA: Security forces have arrested a key terrorist commander in Quetta who was associated with a university as a lecturer.
He has been identified as Dr Usman Qazi and affiliated with a banned militant organisation and was arrested on August 12 following the capture of a suicide bomber on August 11.
The suicide attacker, who was planning a major attack on August 14, had revealed the lecturer’s name during interrogation.
The arrested lecturer is accused of assisting in a 2024 attack at the Quetta railway station and of training dozens of militants, the sources added. Security officials are continuing investigations to uncover the full extent of the network and any possible future threats.
In a confessional statement, Dr. Usman Qazi, who was associated with the BUITEMS University, has admitted to providing support for terrorist activities.
His video statement was displayed during a press conference conducted by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti along with security officials.
Qazi revealed that he received specific instructions from Harbiyar Marri, a militant leader. He stated that Telegram, a secure messaging app, was used to coordinate these operations.
“I facilitated terrorist actions and used Telegram for communication,” Qazi confessed. Expressing deep remorse, he added, “The state gave me everything — respect, position, and dignity. I betrayed my country and I am truly ashamed.”
Last week, Director General of Inter Services Public Relations Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Balochistan are not aimed at harming innocent citizens but are focused on eliminating terrorists and their facilitators.
He made these remarks during an interactive session with students from Balochistan as part of the ISPR internship program. The discussion covered various aspects of Pakistan’s security and development, with special emphasis on Balochistan.
Responding to questions, the DG ISPR highlighted that abandoning an area did not resolve problems, stressing that true success is only possible with active participation of local communities.
He appreciated the sacrifices and resilience of the people of Balochistan, noting that youth, women, and children are increasingly playing a central role in shaping their future.
Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif underlined that Pakistan is founded on unity and shared faith, and despite linguistic diversity, the people of Balochistan remain dedicated to serving the country.
He added that the province’s residents clearly understand the importance of their bond with Pakistan.
The session also reflected on the sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces, including the services of Major Muhammad Anwar Kakar, while discussing the ongoing struggle against terrorism.
The DG ISPR emphasized that lasting peace in Balochistan can only be achieved through cooperation between the public, local leadership, and the administration.
