Senate passes resolution to postpone Feb 8 elections

Islamabad: The Senate passed the resolution to postpone the general elections to be held on February 8 in the country by majority vote.

According to the details, Senator Dilawar Khan presented a resolution to postpone the general elections, in which it has been stated that there is severe cold in most of the areas, due to which it is difficult for these areas to participate in the election process.

Dilawar Khan said that JUI-F members and Mohsin Dawar were also attacked, security forces have been attacked in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan while Amal Wali is also concerned.

Senator Dilawar stated that there are threat alerts from intelligence agencies during the election rally. The Senate states that elections should not be held without resolving the issues, the elections of February 8 should be postponed. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should act on postponing the elections, the Senate trusts their decision.

Senator Afnanullah of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) opposed the resolution saying that he wants to correct the reasons of Senator Dilawar Khan. The security situation in the country is not good, however it was worse in 2008 and 2013. If they postpone the election under the pretext of security, then there will never be an election.

Afnanullah said that Great Britain and US postponed the election during the Second World War. The weather is used as an excuse, the elections have been postponed twice in February.

The League leader added that this boot-polish culture has started, if Pakistan can run without the constitutional body of Parliament.

Senator Samina Mumtaz said that climate change was not there before, now the conditions of the country are changing, we respect our army.

Senator Kahda Babar said: "I am happy that my words have been accepted, there are areas in this country where elections cannot be held".

Meanwhile, Senator Bahramand Tangi of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) remained silent.

Information Minister Murtaza Solangi also opposed the resolution, however, the Senate passed the resolution to postpone the general elections on February 8 by majority vote.
