JI challenges 26th constitutional amendment in SC

Islamabad: The Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan (JI) on Monday challenged the 26th constitutional amendment in Supreme Court.

The JI Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman challenged the amended law, making federation and provinces as the respondents.

The petition, filed by Jamaat-e-Islami head Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, contends that the amendment contradicts several constitutional provisions. The petitioner maintains that the amendment disrupts the established constitutional framework and calls for it to be nullified.

The petition urged that the Chief Justice of Pakistan's appointment should be strictly based on seniority. It questions the role of the parliamentary committee in this process, supposing it unconstitutional. The petition also calls for suspending any new judicial commission formed under this amendment, reinforcing the need to adhere to constitutional principles in judicial appointments.
