Public Health Reference Lab confirms presence of monkeypox virus in 5-month-old baby


Peshawar: A second case of monkeypox has emerged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year, with a 5-month-old baby testing positive for the virus upon arriving at Peshawar Airport from Qatar.
According to APP, the health advisor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ihtesham Ali, confirmed that the virus was detected at Peshawar’s Bacha Khan Airport, bringing the total number of monkeypox cases in the province to 11 since 2022.
The health advisor provided details of the case, stating that the Public Health Reference Lab confirmed the presence of the monkeypox virus in the 5-month-old baby, who recently arrived at Peshawar Airport with her parents from Qatar.
After confirming the case, the health department began screening the parents to ensure their health and safety.
Furthermore, a letter was sent to the airport authorities requesting details of passengers who had traveled near the infected individual to ensure proper monitoring.
The health advisor emphasized that immediate actions are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus and protect public health.
It is also noted that the first monkeypox case of 2025 was reported from Peshawar Airport on January 25, with a 35-year-old individual testing positive after arriving from Dubai.
