According to Reuters, the relaxation in social distancing follows the launching of vaccinations but the concerned authorities are considering to once again impose strict lockdowns for at least another week as 1,212 new cases were recorded from South Korea’s population packed metropolitan city, Seoul.

Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum blames the Delta variant as the culprit for the fourth wave of the virus, which is rampantly spreading, specifically among unvaccinated people in their 20s and 30s.

The Prime Minister advised the people in that age group to get the jab at their earliest, ‘to protect not just yourself, but everyone in your family, friends, school and the country’

"If the situation is not under control after monitoring for two to three days, it might leave us with no choice but to impose the strictest of all social distancing levels," Kim said.

Barely 10% of the country’s population out of 52 million people have been completely vaccinated, while 30% have received one shot, but the majority of them are aged over 60.

Currently, the country is experiencing worse caseloads then it did in the third wave of the pandemic, back in December 25.

South Korea has tallied 2,033 deaths and 162,753 infections since the outbreak.
