Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Muhammad Sibtain Khan has been nominated as the Speaker in Punjab Assembly (PA) on Wednesday, GNN reported citing sources.

Reports quoting sources said, the name was proposed during a meeting between Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Muslim League Q (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi.

The meeting was held at Imran Khan’s residence at Bani Gala.

Sources added that candidates for the PA Speaker were former Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, party leaders Sibtain Khan, Mehmood Rashid and Zain Qureshi—PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s son.

Imran Khan congratulated Pervaiz Elahi on becoming the Chief Minister, following which, later thanked the former Prime Minister for his support and giving him the responsibility to serve the province.

In the meeting, consultations were held regarding the formation of the new cabinet in Punjab.

President Dr Arif Alvi, late Tuesday, administered the oath of office to Chaudhry Parvez Elahi after the Supreme Court declared him the Chief Minister of Punjab, striking down the deputy speaker’s ruling on the election which made Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Hamza Shehbaz lose his status of the trustee CM.

Newly elected Chief Minister Punjab will return to Lahore from Islamabad later today and will take charge of his office.

Muhammad Sibtain Khan has been the Provincial Minister of Punjab for Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries, in office from 29 August 2018. He has been a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, since August 2018.

Previously, Sibtain was a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab between 1990 and May 2018.

In June 2019, he was arrested by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore due to corruption charges, hence, was removed from his post.

In January 2020, He was reappointed as Provincial Minister of Punjab for Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries.
