Caribbean, USA due to host 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in June
Final decisions on the venues would be made collaboratively by the ICC, Cricket West Indies, and USA Cricket.
Lahore: The 2024 Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in the Caribbean and the USA, marking a historic moment as it would be the first time an international cricket event would be hosted in America.
A thorough inspection of potential venues in the USA, such as Lauderhill in Florida, Morrisville, Dallas, and New York, was carried out by an ICC team.
Final decisions on the venues would be made collaboratively by the ICC, Cricket West Indies, and USA Cricket.
The 2024 T20 World Cup not only promises thrilling cricket action but also marks the commencement of the ICC's next commercial cycle from 2024 to 2031, as decided in 2021. The choice to co-host the tournament in the USA was driven by two primary objectives for the ICC.
Firstly, recognizing the North American market as a crucial area for cricket's expansion and development. Secondly, the ICC aimed to showcase its ambition to have the sport featured in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (LA28), thus bringing cricket to the Olympic stage.
Recently, Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea secured their spots in the tournament through regional qualifiers.
Before the regional qualifiers, twelve teams had already secured their positions in the competition. These included the hosts, West Indies, and USA, along with the top eight teams from the 2022 T20 World Cup, namely Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan and Bangladesh earned their places in the 20-team lineup based on their rankings in the T20I format, completing the roster.
The format for the tournament will consist of four groups, each containing five teams in the first round. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8s, from which the top two teams from each group will move on to the semi-finals. Cricket enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating an exciting and historic competition.
