Shahid Afridi wants Babar to lead Pakistan team in Test series against Australia
Afridi, who is critic of Babar’s leadership skills, says he does not believe that there should be any changes, especially in Test cricket.
Karachi: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has extended his support for Pakistan skipper Babar Azam to continue leading the national team, especially in the upcoming matches against Australia next month.
Afridi, who expressed reservations about Babar Azam’s captaincy, said that he is a big fan of Babar Azam.
In a recent media interaction at a local event, Afridi acknowledged the criticism he faced for his comments on Babar's captaincy and emphasized his admiration for the 28-year-old. However, Afridi expressed disappointment, noting that despite the support, Babar has yet to prove himself as a captain and leader.
He acknowledged the peoples’ criticism on him for expressing his views about Babar Azam.
The 46-year-old stressed that successful leadership should involve a collaborative effort of performers working together harmoniously to advance as a unified team, rather than relying solely on a couple of individuals.
Afridi said, “A leader has to be strong. He has to take everyone along with him. A leader does not have one or two players. He has 7-8 performers who take them together forward,”.
He said that there should be no changes in the captaincy, especially in Test cricket, as the Australia tour is imminent. He also stated that the Australia series is significant, and he understood this is a huge responsibility.
“Regarding captaincy, I don't think there should be any changes, especially in Test cricket. Babar Azam should continue to lead,” he added.
The first Test between Pakistan and Australia is due to take place at Perth Stadium next month. The series includes additional matches as follows:
Four-day match: PM’s XI vs Pakistan – December 6-9: Manuka Oval, Canberra
1st Test – Australia vs Pakistan – December 14-18: Perth Stadium
2nd Test – Australia vs Pakistan – December 26-30: Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
