ECP appeal for election tribunals formation set for hearing
CJP Qazi Faez Isa will hear the case on September 24
Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) appeal in the Supreme Court on the issue of the formation of election tribunals in Punjab has been fixed for hearing.
A five-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa will hear the case on September 24. Justice Aminuddin, Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel, Justice Aqeel Abbasi and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan are included in the bench.
It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court had postponed the hearing of the case related to Election Tribunals in Punjab till the consultation of the ECP and the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court (LHC).
Notably, the LHC had decided to form eight election tribunals, based on which the Acting Chief Justice Shehzad Malik had issued orders to form eight tribunals.
The Election Commission challenged the decision of the LHC in the Supreme Court and took the stand that the decision is against the law.
The ECP requested the Supreme Court to suspend the decision of the LHC. After the decision of the Supreme Court on the appeal of the ECP, all the election tribunals formed in Punjab were suspended on the order of the LHC on June 12.
