N.Korea test-fires new ‘railway-borne missile’ with range of 800km
Pyongyang: The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has launched a railway-borne missile to strike the target area area 800 km away, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday.
According to the reports, "The test firing drill took place for the purpose of confirming the practicality of the railway-borne missile system deployed for action for the first time, of judging the combat readiness and capability of performing firepower duty of the newly-organized regiment all of a sudden and of attaining proficiency in the action procedures in case of fighting an actual war".
Pak Jong Chon, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, guided the test firing drill of the missile regiment, it said.
Jong Chon said the railway-borne missile system serves as an efficient counter-strike—meaning its capable of dealing harsh multi-concurrent blow to the threat-posing forces through separate performances of firepower duty in different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, members of the UN Security Council have gathered behind closed doors for an emergency meeting about North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test, which member states consider a major threat.
Earlier, the North Korean capital confirmed that it launched the test on the same day—becoming the first non-nuclear country to test a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
On September 15, officials of South Korea and Japan said they had detected the launch of two ballistic missiles from North Korea, just days after it tested a long-range cruise missile that as per analysts could have nuclear capabilities.
