Mexican President López Obrador tests positive for coronavirus
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been diagnosed with novel coronavirus.
According to details, the 67-year old is experiencing mild symptoms and has isolated himself following the diagnosis.
Mr. Manuel López said that he would continue working from home, including speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin about acquiring the supply of their vaccine ‘Sputnik V’.
The development comes as Mexico witness surge in infections, with deaths nearing 150,000.
Mr. López had vowed to acquire 12 million doses of the Russian-made vaccine if it proved effective.
Although the country has not yet approved the Russian vaccine for widespread use, but officials want to expand Mexican vaccination program for the population of 128 million people. Mexico is also facing delivery delays from United Kingdom (UK) Pfizer-BioNTech.
Mexico has so far reported 1.75 million coronavirus cases since January 2019 with death toll of 149,614, one of the highest in the world and behind only the US, Brazil and India.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron and former US President Donald Trump were also diagnosed with coronavirus.
