Internet slowdown after increased security surveillance, blames WISPAP
Association says internet speed in Pakistan dropped by 30 to 40 percentÂ
Islamabad: The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) on Thursday blamed the phenomenon on increased security and surveillance whose adverse repercussions might lead to severe economic repercussions.
WISPAP Chairman Shahzad Arshad said that it was very discouraging situation for the customers and if this continued then there is fear of shifting many businesses from Pakistan. “Many customers are leaving the smaller ISPs because they cannot sustain the poor service quality anymore.”
According to the WISPAP, internet speeds in Pakistan have dropped by 30 to 40percent. The association blames the slowdown on increased security and surveillance measures, which could lead to serious economic consequences.
WISPAP Chairman Shahzad Arshad warned that the situation is driving customers away from smaller ISPs due to poor service quality. He expressed concern that if the situation persists, businesses may start leaving the country.
The slowdown is particularly troubling for online businesses and electronic services, which are struggling to maintain operations. This disruption is affecting citizens' access to the internet and causing financial losses for the country's economy, especially in sectors like e-commerce and ride-hailing.
WhatsApp users in Pakistan are also facing delays and failures when sending and receiving content. The issue is believed to be linked to the testing of an internet firewall designed to control social media content.
