Reykjavík: A long-dormant volcano in Iceland flared to life, spilling lava down two sides near capital city which is first volcanic eruption of that area in nearly 900 years.

According to officials, the volcano erupted on Friday night and seems to be subsiding and followed thousands of earthquake.
Inhabitants were bracing themselves for an eruption for several weeks as the nation recorded more than 50,000 recent earthquakes.

The lava erupted due to a crack in the Earth’s crust which is hundreds of meters long and a series of small red fountains turned the night sky red.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said in a report on Saturday that the eruption was small and no-one was in danger. However the pollution was likely to have little effect on the health of the area’s inhabitants.

So far the biggest threat was pollution from the gases that had been released, and nearby residents were asked to keep their windows shut.
