Melbourne overtakes Sydney as biggest city of Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said suburbs are being added to the city of Melbourne.
Melbourne has overtaken Sydney— which was Australia's largest city by population for over 100 years—to become Australia's largest city by population.
In recent years the population of Melbourne has grown rapidly and the city has expanded.
According to government’s statistical data, Melbourne's population is 48,75,400, which is 18,700 more than Sydney.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said suburbs are being added to the city of Melbourne.
The figures are from June 2021 and have now been released, which tells that the population of Melbourne has become larger after Melton has joined Melbourne.
This is not the first time that Melbourne has claimed the title of Australia's largest city by population. Earlier in the 19th century, Melbourne was the largest city in Australia, but it was replaced by Sydney in 1905.
Melbourne's rapid growth is largely thanks to international migration, Australian National University demographer Liz Allen told the BBC.
