Islamabad: Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated that Pakistan considered Karabakh as the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan on Sunday.
She said that any attempt to conduct so-called elections by the illegally installed regime was legally and morally reprehensible.
In response to a question on the alleged presidential elections that was held on Republic of Azerbaijan territory, the spokesperson stated that such an attempt was likewise a serious breach of the UN Charter and fundamental rules of accepted international law.
Since the Armenian military invaded Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts in 1991, which is a territory that is officially recognized as a part of Azerbaijan, relations between the two countries have been hostile.
Furthermore, during 44 days of fighting in the fall of 2020, Azerbaijan liberated a number of cities, villages, and communities from Armenian rule. A peace treaty mediated by Russia put an end to the conflict.
Despite ongoing negotiations for a lasting peace agreement, tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia have increased recently over the Lachin road, the only land route allowing Armenia access to the Karabakh region. In April, Azerbaijan established a border checkpoint there in an effort to stop the smuggling of military supplies into the area.
