'Eliminating bad policy'; Biden signs orders on migrant family separation and asylum
Washington DC: President United States (US) Joe Biden on Tuesday has signed three executive orders to launch a task force to reunite families separated at the border under Former US President, Donald Trump's administration.
According to details, Biden has signed several immigration-related orders including overturning Trump's ban on travel from majority Muslim countries and suspending construction of border wall.
In an attempt to deter illegal immigration, Donald Trump's administration separated undocumented adults from children as they crossed the US-Mexico border which forced tens of thousands of people to remain in Mexico.
Trump's administration split up at least 5,500 children from adults along the border between 2017 to 2018.
Under Biden's administration, it’s the latest step to undo Donald Trump’s immigration legacy and offer a sharp change in rhetoric on the issue.
Mr Biden's orders will set up a task force which will try to reunite the estimated 600-700 children who are still apart from their families.
However, the contents of these three executive orders are a reminder that undoing Trump’s policies will take time as they would require policy reviews, planning and recommendation to implement new policies.
After signing the orders in the Oval office, Biden said, “I’m not making new law. I’m eliminating bad policy”.
