Dragon Boat Festival to start in China from June 14
Dragon Boat Festival will start at Beijing in China from June 14. During the three-day celebration, country's box office will release more than a dozen films.
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional and important celebration in China.
Among the films set for release are Japanese animated fantasy "Hello World," Chinese comedy "Sunny Sisters," and US animated adventure "Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.", sports comedy "Never Stop," crime thriller "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and romantic comedy "Wu Hai."
In 2021, Dragon Boat Festival falls on June 14 (Monday). China will have 3 days of public holiday from Saturday to Monday.
The festival’s date is based on the lunar calendar, therefore the date varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar.
It's a traditional festival full of traditions and superstitions, maybe originating from dragon worship.
In 2008 it was first celebrated as a public holiday in China.
On October 30th 2009 it was added to the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Moreover, the wooden boats are shaped and decorated in the form of a Chinese dragon. The boat size varies by region. Generally it is about 20–35 meters in length and needs 30–60 people to paddle it.
There are many legends about the origin of this festival. The most popular one is in commemoration of Qu Yuan.
