Authority says situation may lead to higher water in local rivers and streams

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warned on Wednesday of possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan due to rising temperatures and expected heavy rainfall.
This could lead to higher water levels in local rivers and streams, landslides, and flash flooding, according to the weather authority.
The NDMA has directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority to coordinate with relevant departments for necessary preparations and emergency response measures.
Local communities, tourists, and travelers in high-risk areas are to be alerted. Departments have been instructed to perform their designated duties, and locals and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
Many glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan have been melting over the past several years, creating new glacial lakes holding millions of cubic meters of water. These lakes, usually contained by loose boulders and soil, pose a risk of GLOFs.
