As per the proposed amendment, lawmakers can face disqualification for a period of five years in cases where the constitution does not specify the duration of the punishment.

Islamabad: The Senate on Friday successfully approved an amendment bill in the Election Act 2017 on Friday, which eliminates the provision of lifetime disqualification of lawmakers under Article 62 (1) (f).
The bill, introduced by Minister of State for Law Shahadat Awan, includes an amendment to the Elections Act 2017.
As per the proposed amendment, lawmakers can face disqualification for a period of five years in cases where the constitution does not specify the duration of the punishment. The relevant sections of the act will be applicable in situations where the duration and procedure of disqualification lack clarity.
Under the new legislation, individuals can be disqualified for a five-year period based on orders from the Supreme Court or high courts. The amendment in the Election Act states that Article 62-1F will enforce a five-year disqualification, after which the individual becomes eligible to participate in elections and serve as a member of the Parliament or provincial assemblies.
Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed that the Election Amendment Bill empowers the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce the dates for general elections.
Former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani endorsed the bill, emphasizing its significance in safeguarding the future generations of Pakistan.
Additionally, the House unanimously passed "The Members of the Senate Salaries and Allowances Bill 2023."
