WhatsApp unveils new username feature
This feature is currently available in the beta version.

California: WhatsApp is known for continually updating its messaging platform to enhance the user experience.
In May 2023, there was news of a significant change in the works for WhatsApp, a change that would allow users to use a username in place of their telephone number.
Although details about this new feature were scarce at the time, recent developments have shed more light on it.
According to reports from WABetaInfo, an online source known for tracking WhatsApp updates, the Meta-owned app has introduced this feature in a new beta version for iOS devices.
Earlier, it was seen in the beta version for Android devices in May.
Under this new feature, WhatsApp will add a dedicated section to profile settings where users can select a unique username of their choice.
Users will have the option to choose a username or retain their existing profile settings. Each username will be distinct.
It's important to note that WhatsApp accounts will still be tied to users' phone numbers.
However, with this feature, there's no need to share your phone number to communicate with others.
Instead, you can simply share your username.
In essence, this update will allow users to search for others using their usernames rather than relying on phone numbers or QR codes.
This move is expected to bolster user privacy and prevent phone numbers from falling into the hands of strangers.
Currently, the username feature is available in the beta version of the iOS app.
While there's no official timeline for when it will be rolled out to all users, WhatsApp's recent track record of adding important features suggests that it may be introduced sooner rather than later.
