‘Extensive heavy rainfall, can’t be termed as Cloudburst’; PMD issues clarification

Islamabad: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a clarification statement here on Wednesday regarding torrential monsoon rains wreak havoc in parts of country.

On its official twitter handle, the department in a series of tweets wrote, “It is to clarify that weather system was forecasted earlier vide weather advisory issued by PMD on 26th July 2021 and was disseminated to NDMA and print and electronic media”.

“This was extensive heavy rainfall and cannot be termed as a cloud burst,” it added.

It further added, “Light rain continued in the surrounding areas till filling of this report. Rainfall is likely to recite further and the situation at Nulla Lai at Katarian and Gawalmandi is returning to normal”.    

The rain started in Islamabad at night, following which bridges along electricity poles have been damaged.

Videos from Islamabad's sectors E-11 and D-12 show cars floating in gushing waters after heavy rains that lashed the twin city for hours.

Earlier in June, a cloudburst wreaked havoc in the village of Salkhala in Azad Kashmir’s Neelum district, destroying 16 houses and caused partial damage to 12 houses.
