Gothenburg: At least 25 people were taken to hospital after an explosion hit a residential building in the town of Gothenburg early on Tuesday morning, news agency TT reported.

Reportedly, the blast occurred at about 5.00 a.m. local time on Tuesday in a residential building in the central part of Gothenburg. 

According to Swedish Radio, about 100 residents of the block of flats were evacuated while, at least three of the victims are said to be seriously injured after the explosion.

After the initial explosion, fires broke out in several buildings. 

Emergency services and Swedish police are on site and working to evacuate people living in the area.

The emergency services have 17 units in place, twelve of them ambulances and the extent of the damage is unclear yet.

Police officers began an investigation into the incident in order to find out all the causes and circumstances of the explosion. It is not clear exactly what exploded or where, but police believe it happened inside an apartment. 

However, the building was cordoned off. 

"Several apartments and stairwells are affected. It is at present unclear what has caused the explosion," the emergency services for the wider Gothenburg area said.
