Jakarta: An offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 Wednesday hit near Malaku islands in eastern Indonesia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The tsunami warning is also triggered by USGS.

The epicenter of the shock was located 150 kilometers northwest of the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera, at a depth of 48 kilometers.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii warned as: “Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter,"

The quake jolted the islands at 01:06pm local time.

The aftershocks have been warned by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

No casualties or injured are reported as yet.
