Kate Middleton gets Princess of Wales title, 27 years after Diana’s death

London: Prince William and Kate Middleton have officially assumed the inherited titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, making Kate the first royal to be honored with the title since the late Princess Diana.
King Charles III, who received his new title immediately after the Queen’s death, announced that William and his wife Kate—formerly known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge—would now become the Prince and Princess of Wales.
“Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru. With Catherine (Kate) beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given,” Charles said in his first address to the nation as sovereign.
The gesture was particularly moving as the 'Princess of Wales' title has not been used since Princess Diana's lifetime. It is after almost 25 years that the title is now bestowed upon a royal.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II has come with many changes to the monarchy and the titles of the royals.
Princess Diana held the Princess of Wales title since marrying Prince Charles in 1981 and, after her tragic death, when he married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005, she took on the title the Duchess of Cornwall and was not given the Princess of Wales title out of respect for late princess.
Now that Prince Charles is officially King Charles, Camilla will be known as the queen consort.
Kate and William also updated their social media handles to reflect their new Prince and Princess of Wales titles. “The official Instagram account of The Prince and Princess of Wales, based at Kensington Palace,” the Instagram bio reads.
Notably, Kate already has several titles including Countess of Strathearn and Lady Carrickfergus besides the Duchess of Cambridge. She will also become the new Duchess of Rothesay (a Scottish title currently held by Camilla).
